We're not doing themes anymore, it's open to what the artist wants to do.

Whoa Treybor!!!! That looks like it could be a still shot straight off the big screen!!!

Which reminds me....when are you going to make that prequel animation that I suggested when you were building the Cygnus?

Question: I'm working on a something for this month, a shot of an x-plane screaming past. I want to add a volumetric light at the aft part of the engine to simulate the plasma cone of a scram-jet... but the volumetric distant light and spotlights are circular, and the jet nozzle is sort of oval shaped. Is there anyway to get a volumetric light to fit that cross section?

Thanks much!

You know I haven't tried this but in theory is should work. You maybe be able to create a projection map and use it to control the shape of the light. It works for shadows but not sure about volumetrics.

Is a projection map different from "Front Projection Mapping" that you use to put shadows on the ground?

Yep, think of a projection map as a bit like an alpha map used to cut away parts of the lights cone. Front projection mapping on the other hand is a texturing technique used to project an image onto geometry.

At least I think that is right, if I've goofed I'm sure somebody will set me straight.

Default Waypoint Jupiter

I was having a chat with Tobian about rendering 6 million polygons. I decided to try a scene involving 6 million polygons and ended up with 7,532,100 polygons. This was done with 2 lights (one distance, one area), Medium Classic AA, ray traced shadows and Monte Carlo Radiosity in Lightwave v9.6 on an iMac (3.06 ghz with 4 gb RAM). It rendered in just under 10 minutes.

Turned out so nice I thought I would put it here.

Sweet Pic! If you had turned on the Hypervoxel plants it would have taken 10 days.

Of course! I forgot about all those little points in there. But then, they aren't really visible in that shot anyway. Might be worth a try though.

This is actually an older scene, but I'd been thinking about redoing it with Rhys's (Rhys'?) Omega for a while, and once Amras put up a Lost Tales-style Babylon 5 nebula, I didn't really have an excuse. It was only a couple of days ago, though, while I was refreshing my selection of cycling vanity desktops, that I decided the time had come to start dragging my Babylon 5 pictures into the 21st century, kicking and screaming if necessary. So I present to you the prosaically titled "Shuttle Launch."
